Question of the Week
Q: What time of day should I take my statin?
A: “Statins” are a class of drugs that inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme which means your body cannot manufacture cholesterol. Atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, and simvastatin are examples - the drug name suffix has given this class its title. Because your body manufactures cholesterol while you are asleep, most statins are best taken in the evening with the exception of atorvastatin and rosuvastatin. These two statins remain in the body to be effective overnight, and thus can be taken any time during the day. No matter when you take your statin, take it at the same time each day to ensure more even levels.
